A couple weeks ago, we decided last minute to drive over to the Space coast and watch the Space shuttle take off.
We thought we left with plenty of time to make it over there, but the traffic got pretty bad around Orlando and it ended up taking longer than we expected. We were listening to the countdown on the car radio and decided we'd try to get as far as we could and then pull over the side of the road.
With about 10 minutes left on the countdown clock, we were still about 20 miles from Cape Canaveral and we were still on the highway. All of the sudden, all the cars started pulling onto the shoulder of the road and everyone was jumping out of their cars to watch the lift off. We ended up with a pretty good view since the skies were clear. We could see the flames and even the boosters fall off.
We were a little disappointed that we weren't close enough to feel the rumble, so we've decided we're still going to try to get closer some time in the future. But, Kayla got to see her first rocket go up in space!
